End of the year has got me feeling senti-MENTAL. . . Hats off to these masters of light! ! ! Keeping me smiling, inspired, crying, and hopeful through these apocalyptic times.

1. Michael Haneke

THEE MODERN MASTERPIECE MACHINE. 2 Palms, 98/100 percent masterpiece consistency, hands down the epitomy of "moving" pictures.

2. Werner Herzog

THEE PIONEER. Watching "My Best Fiend" renewed my absolute total respect and admiration for this living legend. 2 words: Klaus Kinski. 2 films: Aguirre & Woyzeck. Laurel Canyon's most interesting resident.

3. Quentin Tarantino

THEE ORIGINAL. Ironic that the master of references be called original, but he does it MUCH better than anyone else. Period. Through this process QT has developed a truly unique and original style. After viewing Django today, I would vote him world's best director of actor's. An American master.

4. Gaspar Noe

THEE EXPERIMENTER. With a solid 100 percent perfect track record of progressive cinematic master-works under his belt, GN is the director I look to as a model and direct influence. Best visuals ever layed down on celluloid... ever.



5. Park Chan Wook - Carlos Reygadas

TIE. Can't leave these two out. I am constantly blown away after watching these two auteurs work. When it comes to narrative, visuals, and style, these two are at the very top, the crest of the cutting edge. The new...
